Die britische Royal Shakespeare Company verkündete am gestrigen Mittwoch offiziell, dass sie ein Theaterstück zu den von George R.R. Martin geschriebene Büchern der Reihe „A Song of Ice and Fire“ produzieren möchte. Der Name dieses Stücks soll „Game of Thrones: The Mad King“ lauten und die Firma konnte wohl Duncan Macmillan (Every Brilliant Thing) als Drehbuchschrauber anheuern. Der Ankündigung zufolge wird das Theaterstück später in 2026 seine Premiere feiern und die ersten Karten dafür sind ab April erhältlich.
Wie man es bei einem Titel wie „Game of Thrones: The Mad King“ erwarten würde, stellt das Ganze ein Prequel zu den Büchern und der TV-Adaption dar. Das Ganze soll sich um ein Bankett in Harrenhal drehen, welches im Vorfeld eines großen Turniers stattfindet. Wer mit der Lore von Martins Büchern vertraut ist, der dürfte bereits wissen, dass dieses Turnier einen zentralen Moment in der Geschichte darstellt. Am Ende der Wettkämpfe krönt der siegreiche Rhaegar überraschenderweise Lyanna Stark zur Königin der Liebe und Schönheit, was die Grundlage für ihre spätere Beziehung, Roberts Rebellion und die Ereignisse in GoT bildet.

Einer gestern von George R.R. Martin veröffentlichten Stellungnahme zufolge war die Royal Shakespeare Company seine erste und einzige Wahl für dieses Projekt. Schließlich fungierte Shakespeare schon immer als Inspiration für seine Arbeit und diese Gruppe ist perfekt dafür geeignet, um ein Stück über politische Intrigen und verärgerte Liebende zu produzieren. Das Ganze passt thematisch einfach besser als ein klassisches Broadway-Stück oder eine ähnliche Produktion, die mehr Wert auf Musik und optische Spielereien setzt.
Als deutscher Fan der Werke von Martin und der davon produzierten Adaptionen kann man sich eigentlich nur darüber ärgern, dass diese Show auf Großbritannien limitiert und sich somit außerhalb der Reichweite der meisten Menschen befindet.

When I first wrote Game of Thrones, I never imagined that it would be anything other than a book. It was a place for my imagination to exist without limits. To my great surprise, it was adapted for a series and viewers have been able to enter the world of my imagination through the medium of television. For my work to now be adapted for the stage is something I did not expect but welcome with great enthusiasm and excitement. Theatre offers something unique. A place for mine and the audience’s imagination to meet and hopefully create something magical.
For me, the RSC was the obvious choice when thinking about putting a Game of Thrones story on the stage. Shakespeare is the greatest name in English literature, and his plays have been a constant source of inspiration to me and my writing. Not only that, he faced similar challenges in how to put a battle on stage, so we are in good company. It will be thrilling to watch the events of this new play unfold in a live environment. Duncan’s masterful script honours the world completely, and I am so excited for both fans of the series, and perhaps people who have never picked up one of my books, to experience this new story in a theatre.
